You may have noticed the current “Daily Special” poll on Chief Marketer’s home page, where we ask readers to pick the best of three TV ad men: Don Draper of “Mad Men,” Michael Steadman of “Thirtysomething” or Darrin Stevens of “Bewitched.”

So, who’d I forget to include? more

Scenes From a Mailbox

Nobody likes to be sick, but a sick day does enable you to catch up on sleep, trash TV, and catalogs. I finally got a chance to peruse the pile of catalogs mounting on the dining room table. Here’s what I observed.

Eddie Bauer, Lands’ End, and L.L. Bean? They must have me confused with someone sportier. Each book probably has one or two basics I could use, but not bad enough to pick up the phone or go online today. I see that Lands’ End has a new yoga collection, which reminds me that I am not making good on a promise to go to a yoga class once a week. (At least I have a good excuse this week—I’m sick.) more

Wayne Huizenga, The World’s Smallest Violin Plays For You

Here we go - sports marketing and politics are intertwined again. Miami Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga says he has to sell his remaining 45% of the team before Democratic candidate Barack Obama becomes president, or, as he told the Sun-Sentinal, or he’ll have to pay more in capital gains taxes. Boo-Freakin’-Hoo.

You know what, Huizenga? Go ahead, sell it. Making statements like that shows you’re not only out of touch with Obama’s plan (and thanks for putting him in office a week before the election), but you’re out of touch with your own fan base. And it’s greedy owners like you who are driving the diehard sports fans away. more

$150,000 Can Buy A Lot Of Clothes

Have you ever tried to buy $150,000 worth of clothing? I mean, that’s about how much it costs to outfit the entire New York Giants organization… or a vice presidential candidate.

How the Republican National Committee was able to run up that kind of tab had to be tiresome. Unless of course the hubby and the kids got something out of it, too. I tried shopping for Palin at Saks.com while eating lunch today, and I could only get to a little under $12,000 before losing my mind. more

Obama the Builder

If you haven’t been following, there are accusations circulating that the Obama campaign ripped-off one of its slogans, “Yes we can,” from Bob the Builder, the popular children’s television program featuring a British construction worker who builds things for no apparent reason.

On every show, Bob and his talking construction vehicles proudly exclaim, “Can we build it? Yes we can!” Then they build a house, an office building, a bridge to nowhere … whatever … often in haphazard fashion due to the “challenges” they face.
