You Can Leave Your Hat On

I was in a barbecue joint for lunch today, one of those places that has old advertising signs on the walls for atmosphere.


One of the ads got me thinking. It was for Stetson hats–not the cowboy kind, but the kind gentlemen wore back in the day (or, from the look of this ad, around 1950). The ad said “every man needs three hats. One for business, one for formal wear, and another for sporting events.”

QVC Minus 700

QVC announced plans to trim its staff by 700, according to The Wall Street Journal. This should come as little surprise, as many viewers of the channel have been hit harder by the economic downturn than most.

Super Bowl Ad Sales Weathering the Storm

It’s no surprise that in the midst of economic chaos, some companies are thinking twice about anteing up for Super Bowl ads. At the $3 million for a 30-second spot NBC is charging, some advertisers are skittish.


But an NFL source reports that the league is poised to unveil a roster of new Super Bowl sponsors this week. Based on the record-setting 97.4 million viewers who tuned in last year’s classic tilt between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, most sponsors are staying the course and paying the rate hike from the $2.7 million Fox charged for last year’s spots.

FedEx Raising Rates for Ground and Home Delivery Services

This just in: FedEx is raising the rates for its FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery services by an average of 5.9%. The new rates go into effect Jan. 5.


The news follows FedEx’s previous announcement that it would increase the shipping rates for FedEx Express by an average of 6.9% for U.S. and U.S. export services, also effective Jan. 5.
