Chrysler Cuts CMO Position

File this one under “another one bites the dust.” Or, perhaps, “drive-by layoffs.”

Chrysler announced on Friday that they are eliminating the job of CMO, and that Deborah Meyer is stepping down immediately.

The car manufacturer says she’s leaving to pursue other opportunities. I’m sure she’s not as hard up as the line workers in shuttered automaking facilities, but its still a sobering bit of news.

Still, cars must be sold to the masses somehow, and AP reports that executive vice presidents Steven J. Landry and Michael Manley will take on new marketing and product planning responsibilities.

So CMOs, feeling just a little bit more nervous about your job security in today’s economy this morning? Or is this bit of news just another blip in the Detroit automotive drama?
