Keeping Their Heads
The Postal Regulatory Commission predictably and wisely chose to recommend that Congress hold onto the U.S. Postal Service’s monopoly on mail delivery and obligation to provide universal service.
Even in the current economic catastrophe, or perhaps in spite of it.
In such an environment, it’s way too easy to think private operators could help the perpetually money-hemorrhaging postal service run more efficiently and–dare I say it—profitably.
But profitable to whom?
A few global corporations who’d pay lip service to universal service but cut it the second it stops producing windfall profits?
In its more-than-200-page report, the PRC painstakingly evaluated the role and history of the USPS and its role in keeping the country together, acknowledging that the current economic climate is putting an ever-increasing strain on the postal service.
To its credit, the mailing industry and the public strongly support holding onto what we have.
Not to mention that gutting the the USPS would create a firestorm of opposition in American society as a whole.

You’ve got to be kidding! The post office does a terrible job. Why? It’s a monoply on first class mail, that’s why.
If they had some competition,it would be better for everyone. The government does nothing better than private industry. When are we going to realize this.
