Stupid Campaign Watch: Most Off-Target Creative Ever

And the winner for worst-targeted creative in 2008 goes to an e-mail campaign that arrived in my wife’s inbox just before Christmas.


The subject line: “The perfect gift for the foodie on your list.”


What did opening the message reveal? A newfangled lemon zester? The perfect garlic peeler?

Hey Branders, take a look at these names that are gone or soon to vanish. This year should be the year of marketing measurement. I can’t say many companies are prospering, but some like, Amazon and Apple seem to be doing just fine. Why? Understanding the customers’ preferences and marketing testing are likely factors.

Macy’s to Close 11 Stores

Macy’s announced today that it will close 11 “underperforming” stores in nine states — including stores in Los Angeles, CA, West Palm Beach, FL, Nashville, TN, and St. Louis, MO. The news follows Macy’s announcement that same-store sales had decreased an average of 4% during the holiday shopping season.
