NPR’s Help Wanted Sign of the Times

National Public Radio’s “Day to Day” is being cancelled in March, a victim of a budget shortfall and NPR’s need to reduce its workforce by seven percent.

But rather than just moan about the fact they’re losing their own jobs, the program’s staff is looking to help listeners in the same situation.

“Day to Day” is inviting listeners who are out of work to e-mail in their stories about their former job, their skills and the sort of look they’re looking for. NPR will call some of these folks, interview them and air a story on the show. Interested prospective employers will be able to contact them through NPR.

The love goes both ways. Loyal listeners who bemoan the loss of the show have started a Facebook group to protest the cancellation. Some are even committing donations to try and resurrect the program.

Is your audience this loyal? And are you this loyal to your audience? It’s something to think about, on any day.
