A Hot Dog Without a Bun?
I just saw State Farm’s “Hot Dog Without a Bun” commercial for the first time. A hot dog without a bun? It’s more like a commercial without a point. It is entertaining. Then again, I found that Pets.com puppet entertaining, too. What does buying a hot dog without a bun really have to do with insurance? For humor to be effective in advertising, it must be relevant, as in Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” commercials. I guess State Farm was trying to reach people who liked Punk’d because the only thing I got from the commercial was a desire to go eat a couple of hot dogs. Without buns.

After I saw the commercial I google’d hot dog without a bun and saw your blog. I’m glad I read it since I didn’t even recall the advertiser. State Farm? How did anyone at the company or the advertising agency approve a TV ad where people enjoy the ad but don’t connect it with the company? Lack of enough or any audience testing? I’m sure there had to be mention of State Farm or the showing of the logo, but I, for one, did not even notice it!

I dont agree that there isn’t a point to the commercial spots and here is why
I think that the commercial had a concept but it wasn’t executed to its full potential b/c you dont remember who the company advertising is.
What I get out of it is that State Farm is saying we provide FULL/COMPLETE services and products….we give you “the whole package.”
A hot dog vendor serving hot dogs without a bun is giving you an incomplete product. . They are just trying to convey that people don’t incomplete products and services and that if you use State Farm your products and services will be complete. But the key is that they were TRYING to convey that and the commercial spot just fell short….

I agree with LP L about the State Farm spot.
I can’t count how many times have I told someone else of TV spot that I found absolutely, fall on the floor hilarious… but then couldn’t remember the advertiser.
Even the funniest commercial - at that point - becomes poorly executed. and THAT is a real shame. -R
