Covering Our Butts
One of Multichannel Merchant’s most-read stories, at least according to the “Most popular articles” box on our Website, is The 10 BEST Catalog Covers. It’s a compelling headline and a great article. There’s only one problem: It’s from June 1999.
What’s the problem with that? Well, aside from the fact that there’s been a decade of great catalog covers since the article ran, it was published before we were putting images on our Website. And because we don’t have the high-res art available any more, the article appears without pictures of the covers.
Yeah, it’s pretty dumb to run an article about the 10 best catalog covers and not show photos of them, as several readers rightfully noted in their comments. It took us a while to get to it, but we have since included a PDF of the original article with the story online.
It’s been a while since I had seen that article, and I had expected the 10 best catalogs from the ’90s to look really dated and amateur compared to today. But I was surprised with how well the author’s picks have held up. (Good job, Glenda!)
Even my art director agreed that these were still 10 exceptional covers. I especially love the #1 pick—J. Crew’s Summer 1992 catalog cover—shown above. Classic!
Are they all this good? Here’s the article—how do you think these covers stack up today?

That really is a great group of covers. The J. Crew one is indeed a classic. And I’m reminded how much I miss the WB Store. :-)

J. Peterman is real? I always thought it was a Seinfeld thing. Nice post!
