There’s been a lot of tut-tutting and tsk-tsking directed at the Republican National Committee since the Politico blog reported on a leaked fundraising presentation. Politico’s Ben Smith wrote: “In neat PowerPoint pages, [the presentation] lifts the curtain on the often-cynical terms of political marketing, displaying an air of disdain for the party’s donors that is usually confined to the barroom conversations of political operatives.”

For marketers, the sexiest slides of the presentation focus on what the RNC dubbed “Putting the Fun Back in FUNdraising, a.ka. RNC Marketing 101.” One slide breaks out the differing motivations of smaller contributors, who are reached via direct marketing, and major donors. The former are described as motivated by “fear” and deemed “reactionary”; the latter are “ego-driven” and more likely to succumb to “peer to peer pressure.” The tools to win over both groups include “LISTS, LISTS AND MORE LISTS!” and “Tchotchkes!!!!!!!!!” (And yes, those nine exclamation points appeared in the original document.)
