New Vampire Database Really Bites
It’s April 1, so you know you have to be on your toes. But this year, you needed to cover your neck too.
AccuData e-mailed its customers a datacard this morning for a hot new compiled file, “Born into Darkness,” offering an undead universe of 9.8 million vampires (831,647 with telephones).
Selects included century of birth, blood type preference, coffin owner, date of death and, of course, mail order buyer. Suggested uses included sunglasses and teeth whitening products.
The datacard was hyped throughout the day on the company’s Twitter feed, AccuDataBrain. Vampires - harder to find than a parking space in NY but I got ‘em. “Vampires—harder to find than a parking space in NY but I got em’,” the Brain tweeted, encouraging dentist to check out the file.
Did everyone get the joke? As of midday today, AccuData had gotten a couple of calls from folks wondering if the list was real, and about 10% of the recipients of the e-mail blast had clicked through to check out the datacard.
Other marketing related pranks today included Google temporarily changing its name to Topeka and NPR offering listeners a massive CD collection of every fundraising announcement ever from the network’s history.

e-Dialog also played a joke on our clients-something we’ve been doing the past 3 years. We announced a new product that transformed regular e-mail into 3D e-mail. You can check out our video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVypAbWL8Y4
We also sent out a letter with 3D glasses a week before the e-mail. So far, clients have given us great feedback. They fell for it and got a good laugh out of it.
