Another Reason for 5-Day Delivery?
National Dog Bite Prevention Week is nearly upon us and that can only mean one thing: The U.S. Postal Service will receive its 5-day mail delivery?
Well, here me out. The USPS is a staunch supporter of National Dog Bite Prevention Week (May 17-23), which calls attention to one of the nation’s most commonly reported public health problems: dog bites.
According to a USPS release, 2,863 postal employees were attacked by dogs last year.
National Dog Bite Prevention Week is a public service campaign that offers safety tips and emphasizes the need for increased pet owner responsibility in the prevention of dog bites. In 2007, more than 3,000 city and rural letter carriers were bitten by dogs.
The five-day mail delivery proposal, if approved, would eliminate Saturday mail delivery. The USPS estimates annual savings of $3.1 billion with this plan and as much as $5.1 billion by 2020.
As a result, besides helping the USPS emerge from its fiscal crisis, wouldn’t one less day of mail delivery mean fewer letter carriers being bitten by dogs?
