Sexy Sells Halloween Costumes
Given that Halloween costumes these days are way more sexy than scary, it was only a matter of time before lingerie merchants got in on the action.
The Boston Herald (via the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio) reports that Victoria’s Secret will offer a few Halloween costume items this fall. The cataloger/retailer’s racier rival Frederick’s of Hollywood has been selling costumers for some time; the company says Halloween season is already its third largest season, behind Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
In fact, Frederick’s today announced three separate multiyear license agreements, including one with Mystery House Costumes. Under the deal, Mystery House will have the right to distribute Frederick’s of Hollywood licensed Halloween costumes and accessories throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia.
In other words, you’ll be seeing a lot more official FOH French maids, naughty nurses and sexy superheros at Halloween costume parties this year. Doesn’t anyone dress up as a witch or the Bride of Frankenstein anymore?
Some predict Victoria’s Secret’s Halloween fare will be more supermodel wannabe than streetwalker—though that will heavily depend on what it is and who’s wearing it.
Still, you won’t win any prizes for costume originality in one of those getups, well, unless you’re a man. There’s nothing funnier than a man dressed as a woman (especially a French maid). I only hope these merchants are offering their costumes in extra large sizes.

If I recall correctly, the FOH store in L.A. has a range of footwear in sizes up to 14W, especially for the transvestite sector of the market. (Though a friend of mine was convinced they were simply for women with very, very, very large feet.)

Sexy costumes are just fine for grown-ups. But MANY moms (and dads) are TICKED off at how kids’ (especially girls’) Halloween costumes are getting sexed up and overly skimpy. The Halloween superstore stink trying to find a decent kids’ costume. My daughter wanted a cat costume - without girly pink stripes - and could only get an adult woman cat costume. Thankfully on a nine year old, with clothes, there was adequate coverage. The picture insert of the woman wearing the costume was embarrassing. My daughter’s goal was to be a cat, not a vamp. Sigh.

I wholeheartedly agree with Kate. So many costume makers are taking sexy too far. The sexy costumes come in kids sizes and that just encourages the kids to go that route at Halloween. There are plenty of costume ideas that kids and teenagers have and I just wish the costume makers would realize that these costumes don’t have to be sexy!

You know, on part of me thinks, yes it’s wrong for manufacturers to make kids characters sexy. But really things like this being available doesn’t mean kids are going to use them. That’s why they have parents to teach them write from wrong and appropriate and inappropriate. It’s like drugs, we all know their available yet we don’t all use them. Just me two cents and sometimes not worth even that. Thanks for the article and the post.
