Be Careful Before You Pull the Trigger

At DMA09 earlier this week, Greg Holzwarth, senior vice president/managing director of customer information at Sun Trust Bank discussed how his company is building automated marketing campaigns around behavior-based triggers.

It’s obviously a sound idea, but one with a big hitch—typically, you can’t let the customer know you’re contacting them because of a specific behavior.

Behold the Power of Social Media: Zingers!

zingers.jpgLast winter, I blogged about my lifelong obsession with finding Dolly Madison snack cakes.

As a child, I loved the Peanuts cartoon specials, which were always sponsored by Dolly Madison. Naturally, I assumed that these must be the best ever snacks—I mean, if you can’t trust Charlie Brown, who can you trust?

Sadly, the brand wasn’t sold in the northeast, so I never got my hot little hands on the sweets…..until now.

Boy, Does That DMA Swing!

Monday morning, I arrived at the San Diego Convention Center and walked towards Hall F for the keynote session. There was a huge crowd milling about. Why weren’t people going inside? Surely the hall wasn’t filled to capacity already?

I mean, why would that many people want to get in? Was there going to be a John Greco/Martha Stewart bake-off or something? Please God, I hoped, let there be a Greco/Stewart bake-off. That would be awesome.

DMA09: Let the Excitement Begin

I’m here in San Diego for DMA09, up waaayyyyy too early because of the time difference. What about you?

I got in yesterday afternoon, and hit the convention center to pick up my badge and conference materials. Tip: If you’re looking for the press room, hire a donkey. And a guide. And bring water and a compass.

The Next Hot Marketing Idea? Newsprint!

Okay, okay. I’m being a little tongue-in-cheek with the headline. But two recent marketing efforts printed on good old-fashioned newsprint caught my attention.

And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Capturing a bit of your prospect’s overcrowded and overtaxed mindshare long enough to get them to consider your offer.

A few weeks ago, a catalog from Oldies.com hit my mailbox. It struck me as odd—a Web site bothering to print a 92-page newsprint catalog? What a waste.

But then I sat down with it.
